There is only one winner of Chelsea’s goal of the year

Chelsea have released their nominees for their “Goal of the Season” award, and there are some truly special efforts in there.

The outstanding candidate is Eden Hazard’s goal against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, way back in the Autumn. The winger slipped and slided between bodies in Red as he worked his way to the box, and then pulled off a truly beautiful finish to hand the Reds their first defeat of the season.

That was a truly special effort, and one that is likely to stay with as long as any Hazard effort, maybe even surpassing his famous solo effort against Arsenal a few years ago.

We can give generous nods to the Belgian’s goal against West Ham, and Ruben’s striker against Fulham this spring, but anyone thinking anything other than Eden’s wondergoal against Liverpool will win is frankly mad.

If that is his parting gift to Chelsea… it is very welcome. It’s just a shame the team couldn’t quite get over the line in that cursed final.
