Marc Cucurella as a left back, doing that job going up and down the flanks, overlapping the winger, but focusing mostly on defending, gives me peak Ashley Cole vibes.
When Cucurella is on form and firing, there isn’t a better overall left back in world football right now.
He is the most tenacious player I’ve watched for a while. Cucurella has matured in these last two seasons. We don’t see the headless chicken moments anymore, we don’t see the rash challenges, we don’t see the stepping in too early to win the ball and getting skinned. We see one of the most solid defenders in the world and an impossible full back to get past. Just ask Lamine Yamal…
Best left back performance in a long time
Wayne Rooney was watching on last night and was on punditry duties for our 3-0 win over Barcelona. And he says he’s witnessed the best left back performance he’s seen in a long time.
Rooney said:
“Cucurella was absolutely incredible. I think it’s probably the best performance I have seen from a left-back for a very long time. To do that tonight, what he did, that shows he’s a serious player.”
And of course, Rooney is bang on with this.
Cucurella deserves all the plaudits he’s been getting. On a human level as well he just seems like a really good guy and a very funny one too. He deserves the best and I’m so pleased he’s found and sustained regular top form in the last two years.
