There will always be tensions, disagreements, and fallouts between many people at any football club in the world. It’s just natural.
Disagreements are all part of the game. Everyone has different opinions, and sometimes people just wont see eye to eye. It happens at all levels in football, it happens amongst fans too, it happens in this incredible community we have here. It’s what makes the game so great, we all see it through different eyes.
But when you are having disagreements between a head coach and a club hierarchy, it will often only end up in one way – and the club hierarchy are not going to be walking away right now, are they?
You can deal with little disagreements that stay behind the scenes, little in-house issues. But once they become so public, once a head coach is out there clearly stating that he is unhappy with the lack of the support that the club has given him, I actually see that is being too difficult to come back from and really, they should just part ways sooner rather than later.
I cannot see a world where they can continue together. There has just been too many of these situations that insiders like myself have heard about from VERY good sources throughout Maresca’s reign where I just cannot see it going forward. Maresca is frustrated and unhappy, and he has been many times before for various different reasons. He has been close to walking on a couple of occasions last season after similar situations.
Unfortunately, I’ve heard similar stories with all of our managers under this new ownership as well and it’s been cited as reasons why other managers they’ve interviewed, Julian Nagelsmann for example, have not taken the role. It’s been made clear that the decision makers across all operations are at the top and down through the sporting directors. Some managers prefer to have a bit more of a say.
But the thing that’s bothered Maresca the most, at least this week, is how involved they have become in his role. How they have offered critique and questioned too much of what he has been doing. Whether you think that is right or wrong, and I know there will be differing views on that, I actually respect Maresca for standing up and saying something at least.
Yes, he has now picked a fight that he cannot win, but I’d much rather see someone stick to what they believe than just fold over into a yes man. I do respect that.
Where does it go from here? I have no idea. Who will take a yes man role and why should we even want or accept a yes man? I have no idea. But I just feel now that too much has happened and there has been too many disagreements for Maresca and the club to continue. This is NOT me saying he should be sacked. But from everything I know and have heard this week and over the last two seasons, I just can’t see this ending well for Maresca and if they are going to part ways anyway, it’s better to just get on with it.
