Chelsea’s first bid for Granit Xhaka has been rejected, and the question now is how high they want to go for him.

It was a busy weekend of World Cup action – but in the background Chelsea were really getting into gear in the transfer market too.

The Blues launched a bid for Granit Xhaka from Sunderland which has grabbed all the headlines. The initial talk was of a €40m offer, which we immediately dismissed as ridiculous given the midfielder’s age.

Since then, the likes of Fabrizio Romano have made it clear that the offer was actually just £8m. That hasn’t been enough to tempt the Black Cats to sell, however, as the Italian insider explained in a Tweet today.

Romano says Chelsea “will continue talks” this week to “try to unlock the negotiation.”

For his part, Xhaka “keeps on pushing” to join Chelsea, where he’s keen to link up with manager Xabi Alonso again.

Clearly this is a move Alonso thinks is important for building his new team – and it’s a first test of how willing Chelsea are to back him even when his plans go against what they’ve been building.

In other news…

Pep Chavarria is a surprise option for Chelsea at left back this summer, with a few scattered rumours yesterday now getting a seal of approval from bigger sources.

Chelsea are looking at Felix Nmecha, who is having a great World Cup with Germany. It would be a very expensive deal, however.
