With the signings of Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoué Bakayoko, and Alvaro Morata, Chelsea have made a fantastic start to the summer transfer window.
After winning the Premier League title last season, Antonio Conte has looked to freshen up his squad ahead of the club’s title defense and has brought in a number of new faces to improve the champions.
However, in a press conference last week, The Telegraph reported that the Italian manager admitted that there was still work to be done in the summer transfer window, revealing that the London club “needs more players” if they are to be as successful as they were last season.
So, with this in mind, we reveal the one player who we believe Chelsea should sign in defense before the end of the transfer window.
At left wing-back last season, Chelsea had no cover for the ever-present Marcos Alonso who made 30 appearances for the Blues. Although Cesar Azpilicueta – who can play on either the right or left side of defense – was deployed at left wing-back when his fellow Spaniard was injured or suspended, Antonio Conte has proven that he prefers Azpilicueta playing in the centre of defense.
As a result, going into the new season Chelsea need cover for the left wing-back position and, as one of the best English left-backs in the Premier League, Ryan Bertrand is one player who Chelsea should be looking to sign before the end of the transfer window.
Since being sold to Southampton in 2015, Ryan Bertrand has established himself as one of the best wing-backs in the country. With his speed, attacking runs, and defensive discipline, Bertrand has attracted the attention of the Premier League champions who are looking to bring him back to Stamford Bridge, according to the London Evening Standard.
If Chelsea are to re-sign Bertrand, the 27-year-old would be the perfect back-up to Macos Alonso, who will likely be be Conte’s first choice left wing-back for the 2017-18 campaign.
However, as well as acting as cover for the Spaniard, one could argue that Bertrand, if signed, should be able to compete with Alonso for a starting role.
Whether he is signed as a backup to or replacement for Alonso, Chelsea must sign Ryan Bertrand before the end of the summer transfer window in order to keep a mean defense.
