Antonio Conte will have a clear run at Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp pulled out of a deal to sign the 26-year-old this week, reports Toby Gannon of The Sun.
As per The Sun, the Liverpool manager is ready to put faith in his current back-four and will not pursue his interest in the Southampton no.17.
“We have four centre-backs. I don’t think we need more,”
Klopp told The Sun.
Despite the arrival of Antonio Rudiger from Roma this summer, The Sun report that Chelsea are keen to add another centre-back to their squad and have identified the Netherlands international as a potential target to add competition for places.
According to The Sun, Southampton would prefer to sell the defender to Chelsea after they accused Liverpool of tapping up their best defender earlier in the summer. You can bet on soccer and where you think Van Dijk will end up playing his trade next season.
The Saints defender is currently training on his own and, as per The Sun, Chelsea will look to rescue the centre-back by making a £50 million bid this week.
