The reliable Matt Law has provided an update on Antonio Conte’s situation at Chelsea for the Telegraph.
We thought that Conte would have been gone by now. With concrete links to both Maurizio Sarri and Laurent Blanc, few are left doubting that the Blues are actively searching for a new manager.
However, Law claims that we are still reluctant to pay the £9M that it would take to terminate Conte’s contract. The Real Madrid vacancy could be our saving grace.
With Zinedine Zidane departing the Santiago Bernabeu, having won three Champions Leagues in a row, Conte is thought to be on the shortlist to replace the Frenchman.
As Law writes, if Conte is appointed the new manager of Los Blancos, Chelsea will not have to pay him the £9M remaining on his initial three-year contract.
It appears as though our board are playing a waiting game, despite the transfer window now being in full swing. It’s risky, but if it saves us £9M that could be invested elsewhere, it may well be worth the wait.

Hanging onto Conte in case Madrid come calling, is madness! Firstly, I don’t think he’ll get the Madrid job, and secondly, if we delay sorting our managerial situation too long, transfers will cost us more, clubs will know we’re desperate and it’ll probably cost us more than the 9m needed… Read more »
