Why Xabi Alonso’s style of football will be different to his first season at Leverkusen

Chelsea fans are going to get some pretty interesting football to watch under Xabi Alonso, according to a Leverkusen fan.

Chelsea have a new manager coming in this summer, and Football.London were curious about what style of football he would have the Blues playing.

They spoke to Dr. Constantin Eckner (with a name like that, you’ve got to take his views seriously), about what to expect from the incoming coach.

“The style slightly varied from season to season,” the Leverkusen fan explained.

“In his first year, after he took over mid-season, he simply tried to stabilise the team. During the championship-winning season year, Leverkusen played pretty sophisticated possession football where they advanced the ball through Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz to break the opposing press.

“There were tweaks made by Alonso from time to time. At times, they used one of the centre-backs to exploit holes in the oppositions’ defence. Other times, they put an emphasis on dribbles by the wingers. It was, for the most part, a proactive style of football. In his final season, Alonso reverted to a stronger focus on transition attacks, especially when facing strong opponents.”

At Chelsea, he has a whole summer to get to work with his group, unlike his first year in the Bundesliga. Hopefully that means he’s able to jump to the “sophisticated” football of his first full season at Leverkusen.

In other news…

Marc Cucurella continues to be asked about his future, but has so far resisted pushing for a move away from Chelsea too openly.

Real Madrid are insisting they’re going to make a big splash this summer – and that could play into Chelsea’s hands to some degree.
