I’ve seen some people say how we’ve already signed the likes of Valentin Barco (not been made official yet by the way), Emanuel Emegha (reported yesterday that the plan for him is still up in the air as we’ve been reporting for weeks), and Geovany Quenda (very young, raw, and injured for the majority of last season), so we don’t need to do much more and have already improved our squad. Can’t be arsed to go find the posts but I saw two yesterday at least saying similar to the above.
I’ve also seen some Chelsea fans subtly starting to accept mediocracy and already making excuses for the fact that we could have a shite window this summer (it’s a long window so as I say I am prepared to wait and see). They will hide behind the ‘well if that’s what Alonso wants’ card, a lot like the club will probably do if things go tits up again this season. I’m already seeing excuses, and it absolutely infuriates and pains me.
He’s not exactly wrong here and has certainly made some good points. But this is the pattern I am already starting to see, excuses being made and a full reliance on Alonso alone to sort this mess out. Yes, a manager can make a huge difference, but he still needs tools to do a job. This squad is FAR from good enough as it is, that has been proven countless times now, how can people still ignore that fact?
Again, he’s not wrong here. But it’s the pattern that is worrying to see. People have dropped their guards, they are being more accepting, they are starting to make excuses. It’s concerning because we as a fan base have to continue to demand Chelsea standards.
These two posts above aren’t the ones I was talking about in my opening sentence by the way, but they do concern me all the same.
I’m not saying go and spend another half a billion on a bunch of players this summer, and as The Score wrote today on our site, we do have to be smart in the market this window. We have to do that because our wage structure and lack of European football makes it impossible to do it another way. But that does not mean our standards should drop and we should be allowing excuses and mediocracy.
I don’t want to hear anything about ‘internal options’ instead of using the summer market correctly and using that as a lame excuse for not handling your business. I simply cannot do that again. I can literally see it now… ‘Alonso rates Garnacho so we are not signing a new winger now’….
They’ve done incredible to get Alonso in, now that MUST be backed this summer in the market, it’s as simple as that. I will not allow Alonso to take full responsibility and the full brunt of any failures going forward like they have pinned on every other manager that THEY hired (still can’t believe they tried to blame a manager change on a failed season last season – shameless). No fan should allow that again. We need to improve the squad this summer and no, I don’t mean with just Barco, Emegha, Quenda, etc, even if they might one day turn out to be decent players. I’ve even seen ‘Levi Colwill is also a new signing’. I mean, what is that!? Alonso is not a miracle worker, he needs backing.
I for one will not allow ‘Alonso signs off all decisions’ just because they named him manager rather than head coach and then pumped PR out to make sure we’re all aware of the significance of that. We all know that Alonso will not run things at this club. Yes, he will get more of a say than previous managers, but he will not be the final sign off for any decisions, a lot of things will still be out of his hands.
My only hope is that he clearly saw something that he can buy into with this ‘project’ and the players we have – so even though he is likely to lose two of the key players and more senior leaders in Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez already, I can hold some hope that what he sees and what he has heard here will be enough to move us forward again, and that he hasn’t just been filled with empty promises.
I for one though, will NOT allow him to be a scapegoat, he’s not a magician. Back the man, sign quality, IMPORVE what we have, clear out the crap. As fans, we should be keeping the pressure on for all of this to happen too, and I will not drop that.
