There are now two Chelsea players with the England squad, but only Reece James is a starter. More than that, he’s a Thomas Tuchel favourite, and that “bromance” is the subject of Matt Law’s piece for the Telegraph today.
James hails Tuchel as best manager
James told Law that he’s never worked with a manager as good as the German, who won the Champions League while James played a key role:
“With what [managers] I’ve worked with? The best. There’s various reasons why. But I think he brought trophies to the club when we probably least expected it, in a difficult period.”
Apparently the pair “speak and message regularly”, so James was never in doubt about his role in the squad even when he ended the season with a hamstring injury.
Tuchel also knows from personal experience that he has to be careful with James. There will be rotation for everyone – but with James it’s about more than just freshness. We expect him to start against Ghana, then sit out the Panama game entirely.
