Cole Palmer’s exclusion from England’s World Cup squad will have been a huge blow for him personally, and former Blue Franck Leboeuf is hoping it inspires the attack to get back to his best:
“You cannot deny it, every time he touches the ball, something happens, or something can happen,” Leboeuf said on ESPN.
“Now, I would say he has to go back to work with humility because I think it was a big slap in the face that he wasn’t selected for the World Cup. So that should make him react.”
Debate about Palmer selections back in headlines
The debate about Palmer not being taken to the World Cup was always going to simmer up at some point – and after two stodgy England performances, it’s no surprise to see it raised.
But Palmer would have had the exactly same problems as Morgan Rogers had against Panama or Ghana. Teams who sit deep are always going to make it tricky for you.
We’re not sure Chelsea’s talisman, on the form he’s shown over the last 18 months, would have been able to offer anything that the other England options didn’t already.
