It was looking like a pretty quiet Monday on the Chelsea beat – but then an announcement from Man City changed everything.
City announced Enzo Maresca as their new manager, and that was immediately followed by a statement from Chelsea. In it, the club explain in detail “what happened” back in January when Maresca was sacked as Blues boss.
Why and how Maresca walked away

In a stinging statement which pointedly avoids naming Maresca, they give the full story. The erstwhile Chelsea boss spoke to his superiors “in Autumn” about potentially leaving to take over from Pep Guardiola.
“It became clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola and that he was fully committed to pursuing the opportunity, despite the fact he was under a long-term contract which he had no right to terminate.”
In December, “our Head Coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned.”
The club say they felt “let down”, but were forced to accept his resignation. Because of the way it worked out, a settlement has been reached with Man City, and another with Maresca “under which he will pay compensation.”
They conclude by saying that, in Xabi Alonso, we now have a “professional of the highest integrity.”
You don’t have to be a genius to see what’s being implied there. Let’s hope it turns out to be true.
Maresca’s reception at Stamford Bridge next season is going to be very interesting indeed.
