The links connecting Chelsea to Granit Xhaka are only growing stronger – but they face a tough task in persuading Sunderland to sell.
Chelsea transfer insider Ben Jacobs had his latest update on the developing saga which sees the Blues try to prise the club captain away from his team. It’s not going well, and it could yet get ugly.
Xhaka still in contact with Chelsea – deal some way off

“My information is that this saga isn’t over because Chelsea are prepared to bid again,” Jacobs explained.
“Obviously, Sunderland’s position is not for sale, and they’re quite irritated by the Chelsea approach, because Sunderland sources argue that they’d inform Chelsea the player wasn’t for sale before they even bid, £8 million bid rejected.”
One thing is for sure – now Sunderland are “irritated,” they’re not going to accept a reasonable fee. Almost by definition, Chelsea are now going to have to overpay. This is becoming an early test of how much they’re willing to do to please their new manager Xabi Alonso, who has specifically requested Xhaka as a key part of his new look team.
They really don’t want to fail him so early.
In other news…
Marcel Desailly has told Chelsea to back their new manager, even if that means signing Xhaka for a hefty fee.
The rumours about Pep Chavarria coming to Chelsea have appeared from nowhere and now seem to be getting very serious. Marca have a report about our latest bid.
