Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has encouraged Blues manager Antonio Conte to keep splashing the cash this summer as his former side look to retain the Premier League title this season, report the Mirror.
Speaking to BT Sport before Chelsea’s Community Shield clash against Arsenal on Sunday, the Mirror report that the former England international explained that the London club are short of players and need to make two signings ahead of the new season.
In particular, the retired player identified central midfield as one of the positions in which his former side need to strengthen this summer to remain competitive.
Lampard is quoted by the Mirror saying: “I think they need another midfield player. They are waiting on Tiemoué Bakayoko to be fit.
“It’s a lot to ask Cesc Fabregas against big teams in a difficult game to patrol as one of the two, and get on the ball to affect games. That’s a lot to ask. Maybe that would relieve Cesc to go further forward and they need cover on the wing-back roles,” Lampard explained in an interview with BT Sport which was published in the Mirror.
As well as identifying Chelsea’s need to add another midfielder to their title-winning squad, the 39-year-old pointed out the fact that Chelsea’s wing-backs Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso will struggle to play every game this season with the Blues having to compete on four fronts and, as a result, must add new defensive options, as the Mirror report:
“The wing-backs, if that’s what they’ve got, they’re going to play so many games this year and they need more.”
