Ruben Loftus Cheek had much less time in preseason that most players.
The fact that England made it to the third place playoff in Russia meant that the midfielder was in the last group to return to training, with Gary Cahill, N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud.
While Kante has stepped straight back into the team, the others have been introduced more slowly, and so it was great to see Ruben come on at the end of the game against Huddersfield last weekend.
He looks a perfect player to be the third man in Maurizio Sarri’s 433, and speaking to Chelsea’s official website he described what he can do in that role:
‘Playing in a 4-3-3 in an attacking midfield position is kind of my position really, my suited position, so hopefully I can bring my best football to the team.”
As for adapting to a new style and a new system, RLC backed up what Kante had been saying earlier in the week: they’re working on it, but it will take time.
‘The boys are working really hard trying to understand how the boss wants us to play, on and off the ball, and it will only get better.’
We can’t wait to see what they’ll be able to conjure up with a few games under their belt, Ruben especially. This is a key time for his career, and the next few weeks will tell us a lot.
