The Athletic’s Real Madrid correspondent called Marc Cucurella’s move to Spain “the surprise move of Real Madrid’s summer transfer window.” After weeks of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid links, it was Real who made the move.
It creates an interesting situation for Madrid, who now have four left backs. It creates an equally interesting situation for Chelsea who now just have one.
Chelsea prime Hato to take over as first choice left back

According to Simon Johnson, the form of Jorrel Hato at the end of the season was a “significant factor in the club’s decision” to sell Cucurella.
We all saw the young Dutchman doing well, sometimes at left back, sometimes at centre back. But is he really ready to be number one for a whole year? We’re not so sure. Still just 20 years old, there are lots of ups and downs still to come – just cast your mind back to Cucurella’s early struggles.
It would seem mad to throw Hato in at the deep end, but right now that looks like the plan.
In other news…
With Cucurella gone, the question is what Chelsea are planning at left back. Jorrel Hato is the heir apparent – but is he ready for that?
The reports about an incoming deal appeared last night, and by this morning it was already confirmed.
