Reece James played 90 minutes for England last night and looks set to be a key player at this tournament.

England have Reece James as the only Chelsea player in their starting lineup at the moment, meaning Blues fans are watching closely.

Thomas Tuchel had to explain today why he took off Declan Rice and moved James into midfield in the latter stages of yesterday’s win over Croatia:

“Declan had some unusual ball losses, and I saw a bit of discomfort,” the coach explained.

“I didn’t want to take any risks, and if I take Declan off, which I never want to do, it was the moment to protect. I think Reece James did so well to replace him in midfield; he did a fantastic game.”

Tuchel needs to remember James fragility

We’re delighted with how Reece did, and we’re sure he’s ready to replicate that in games to come. However, Tuchel needs to be very careful with managing minutes here. James has shown he’s capable of playing once a week, but games at the World Cup come around faster than that, especially if you go deep.

We would hope to see James rested for at least one of the remaining group games, now that England are close to qualified.

In other news…

We’ve already written about the praise James got, and how careful England need to be with him for the rest of this tournament.

Chelsea are considering selling Malo Gusto, and have already been in talks with two clubs about the French full back.
