Alvaro Morata is on the verge of becoming an Atletico Madrid player, and Maurizio Sarri has now revealed that the Spaniard requested a transfer a month ago!
Maurizio Sarri gave Alvaro Morata a fair chance, the striker could never argue against that. He could have been tempted to sign a new striker, having seen the way Morata played under Antonio Conte, but he instead misplaced faith in the misfiring 26-year-old.
Sarri soon realised that Morata wasn’t the man he wanted to lead his line. Olivier Giroud was given an opportunity to impress at the spearhead of the attack, with Eden Hazard been trialled as a false 9 later in the season. Neither moves would have pleased Morata.
By the look of things, it didn’t take Morata long to realise that he didn’t want to stay at Stamford Bridge and play under Sarri. The Chelsea manager has now revealed that he was informed of Morata’s desire to leave a month ago. That explains the miserable celebrations!
Sarri is quoted by FourFourTwo saying:
“I think that Morata is a very good player. I think that Morata has the characteristics for playing in my team. But Morata, one month ago, said he wanted to play in another team. So it was really very difficult for him to give us the 100 per cent for his mental situation, I think.”
Few Chelsea fans will be shedding a tear as we see Morata holding up the Atletico jersey for the first time. He’s an extremely forgettable signing, having contributed little to the club. Let’s hope Atletico use their option to buy and we recoup a decent amount of cash.
