Diego Simeone appears to have got the completely wrong idea about Alvaro Morata. Sorry, Diego, you’re stuck with him now!
Morata may well have succeeded in spells during his time at Real Madrid, but for the most part that was as an impact substitute. He didn’t have the responsibility of leading the line for a big club, like he did when he made a club-record move to Chelsea.
Cristiano Ronaldo carried the majority of the goal-scoring burden, with the likes of Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale also contributing. Morata scored against weaker opposition when the pressure was off. His flaws as a striker came to the fore at Stamford Bridge.
Morata continually proved to us that he was not capable of cutting it at this level. There is scarcely a more accurate headerer of the ball out there, but with the ball at his feet he falls short. He also doesn’t have the natural striker positioning which you’d expect with a striker of ‘his calibre’.
Simeone hasn’t discovered that yet. He will have Morata at his disposal for the next 18-months, which he appears naively optimistic about. He’s quoted by Cadena Ser revealing his belief that in Morata Atletico have a ‘poacher’…
“With Morata, once again we have a poacher…”
Sorry to break it to you, Diego, but he’s a million miles away from being a poacher…
