After weeks of rumours and hearsay, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has finally given his word on Fikayo Tomori’s future. The Canadian-born has suffered from lack of game time this season after falling out of contention in the centre-back position.
He has played four matches in 2020/21 – registering 234 minutes across all competitions (transfermarkt) and appeared most recently for Chelsea as a substitute with 10 minutes to go, in the 4-0 victory over Morecambe in the FA Cup third round.
The 23-year-old’s place in the first eleven has been regularly overshadowed by veteran Thiago Silva and Frenchman Kurt Zouma.
Speaking to the press after Chelsea’s win over League Two opponents Morecambe, Lampard made his thoughts clear:
“Situation with Fikayo is open at the moment. There is a possibility he could be going on loan to get games somewhere else. So that would have to be the solution for him and the club. That was part of my thinking of not starting him today.
“I gave him some minutes at the end but while we are looking at that I wanted to make sure it was the right thing for the club and for him and individually. So that’s why he didn’t start. But his attitude, even though he hasn’t played much recently, has been fantastic in training and in how he is.” (football.london)
While Tomori has been quiet about his future, a move away from Stamford Bridge is arguably the best bet for the England international’s career development and potential game time.
