Maurizio Sarri

Maurizio Sarri has defended his decision to field Eden Hazard as a false nine, despite Chelsea firing blanks against Leicester City this afternoon.

Hazard could easily have marked today’s game with his 100th Chelsea goal. He struck the crossbar after racing through on goal with Kasper Schmeichel.

However, the Belgian failed to find the back of the net and Chelsea subsequently fell to a rather embarrassing 1-0 defeat to the Foxes and under-pressure manager Claude Puel.

Fans could be forgiven for pointing the finger at Sarri following such a loss. Perhaps we lacked a focal point without a striker on the pitch.

You’re within your rights to think that, but Sarri disagreed. In his post-match press conference, Maurizio defended his decision to use Hazard through the middle.

He’s quoted by Football London saying:

“I was really very happy at the end of the first half. We were dangerous, conceded nothing to the opponents. I was happy with the team, with the solution of Hazard as a striker. After the goal the position was important.”

Hazard is never going to improve as a false 9 unless he is given an adequate opportunity to do so. If we stick with him there over the festive period, we guarantee you’ll see an improvement.
