As the January transfer window approaches, Marcos Alonso seems to be on his way back to Spain on loan with Atletico Madrid.(The Independent)
With the arrival of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City in the summer and the reemergence of Emerson Palmieri, Alonso has found himself out of the squad more times than not. So far this season the Spanish full-back has only featured three times for Frank Lampard’s side compared to 29 appearances last season. (WhoScored)

According to The Independent, and now confirmed by MARCA, Atletico Madrid are close to agreeing on a loan deal with Chelsea for the Spanish full-back. With the January transfer window opening in four days, this is a deal that may happen soon.
Shola’s Opinion
This is a deal likely to happen in the next week or two. Atletico Madrid held an interest in Marcos Alonso even before his lack of appearances, so it is no surprise that they have rekindled their interest in him now. (Bleacherreport)
We remember him as a great servant for Chelsea since his arrival in 2016. However, the recent form of Ben Chilwell and the defensive stability that Emerson Palmieri provides, when he plays, cannot be ignored. Not to mention, the development of 18-year-old left-back Ian Maatsen, on loan at Charlton Athletic, has been very good.

Nonetheless, Marcos Alonso’s 2020 may not have been the best, but we wish him all the best wherever his future takes him in 2021. Once a Blue, Always a Blue!
