Maurizio Sarri has revealed why Marcos Alonso was not in the matchday squad to face Manchester City, insinuating that he may remain out in the cold.
Alonso has been a cornerstone in Sarri’s starting eleven so far this season. It’s for that reason that it came as such a surprise that the Spaniard was not included in the starting eleven, or even on the bench, for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.
Emerson Palmieri, who Chelsea fans have been screaming out for over the past weeks and months, started in his place – and certainly justified his inclusion. Emerson was one of our best players on the day and would merit another start against Spurs.
Sarri has strongly suggested that the Brazilian may well get his wish, while also revealing the reason behind Alonso’s omission at Wembley. Speaking to the media ahead of tomorrow’s big game, he’s quoted by the club’s official website saying:
“I didn’t want a left-back on the bench. It is the same situation with Emerson usually. It depends on the position.”
“In this moment Emerson is doing very well, so I have to use him. It depends on the mental condition, the physical condition. Emerson now is in a very good physical and mental condition.”
Alonso boasts effective shooting technique – but little else. He can’t defend, his crossing is poor for the most part, with Emerson being the better player in virtually every category. We’re glad Sarri is finally coming to realise this, as we’re sure you are too.
