Frank Lampard

It will take a long time for total normality to resume again due to the global pandemic we are all fighting.

In terms of football, clubs may well have to revise plans on spending a lot of money on new players when the transfer window does reopen, due to the economic affects that the pandemic will bring.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard certainly had/has some big plans for a small squad overhaul, and he can still do this – but may need to think wise with some purchases in order to spend elsewhere on priority targets.

Here are 5 players who at the time of writing, will become free agents at the end of June that Lampard should take a look at.

  1. Dries Mertens

The Belgian international is heavily linked to potentially joining Chelsea already, after Lampard failed with an attempt in January. He will be a perfect player to bring in under the financial circumstances.

Mertens brings you quality, goals, and experience. He also gives you versatility and does not block Tammy Abraham’s long term progress, if that is who we are putting our trust in. So bring Mertens in with his Champions League and international experience, and save cash on a risky option such as Moussa Dembele.

2. Ben Foster

Lampard wants a better backup for Kepa Arrizabalaga, so bring in the experienced Foster. You aren’t going to get Andre Onana for much less than £40 million, so don’t spend a penny and get a quality keeper in Foster for the next couple of years whilst you are still deciding on whether Kepa is the long term future or not. No brainer this one.

3. Jan Vertonghen

Yes he is 33, and yes he won’t last forever, but you ask any Chelsea fan the three main things missing from our back line so far this season and I am sure they will say leadership, dominance in the box, and experience.

Vertonghen has all of that. He would be another great player to add to the group and immediately improve the squad at the cost of absolutely nothing, rather than take a risk spending £40 million on a young unproven centre back such as the largely linked Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille.

4. Layvin Kurzawa

Chelsea could lose both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri this summer if they ask to leave, and Kurzawa is a great immediate option to bring in and replace one. He is a France international and has plenty of experience but is still on 27-years old. A great player that would fancy his chances of nailing down the regular left back spot here for sure.

Sign these four and you are getting instant improvements to the squad and instant experience added – two vital things our squad has been missing this season.

But perhaps more importantly, this will free up funds to go elsewhere on other priority targets such as Jadon Sancho, if is still the case.
