Adam Wharton is an appealing target for Chelsea but they need UCL – opinion

As I reported earlier in my sourced article, Adam Wharton has become Chelsea’s No.1 target in midfield for the summer.

Wharton would tick a lot of the boxes that we need to add in this starting Xl for me. He also fits in within our recruitment structure only being 22-years-old.

The England international is a proper 6, something I don’t think we have in this team. But he’s also just a very good all round football player. He’s good on the ball, technically solid, can create, is a good passer, and he’s a strong and physical player who is tough in the tackle and used to this league.

Bringing him in would allow more freedom for Moises Caicedo to go do his intercepting further forward and win the ball with the counter press. Chelsea certainly need this type of profile added in.

Wharton is a player with a great attitude and a strong mentality as well, meaning I can see him turning into a good leader in time.

I see him as a good versatile player who is composed in possession, can dictate the play from deep, play makes, but is also a player who plays with tenacity and reads the danger well, breaking up play.

I saw him described as a “classy, fiercely competitive midfielder” in an article recently, and that is spot on.

He has recorded 350 total ball regains across all competitions this season, placing him among the top 10% of midfielders for recovering possession after an opponent’s pass.

Wharton has won 119 total duels in the Premier League this season, maintaining a success rate of approximately 49.8%.

In December 2025, he was noted as ranking second for interceptions made (1.1 per match) among a select group of top Premier League midfielders, including Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice.

He is making 2.44 tackles per 90 this season, 0.95 interceptions, 5.44 ball recoveries, and winning 4.80 ground duals per game.

Wharton’s defensive discipline is also notable; despite his high volume of tackles, he has committed only 1.20 fouls per 90 minutes this season.

It’s certainly a signing that would appeal to me, should it even advance.
