All the talk is about attackers, but Chelsea have a more important area to improve

There is no doubt that Frank Lampard needs to sign attackers, especially if some of them leave this window as is reported.

But for me, there is a much more important area that needs one major addition and that is at centre back.

Lampard has spent the season so far floating between his four centre backs not really knowing his best options. Andreas Christensen is the only one who he seems to be clear about right now, with the Dane being well out of favour in recent months.

Lampard was to assess Antonio Rudiger upon his return to fitness in order to see whether he needs to bolster the centre back area. Although he hasn’t really put a foot wrong, just the like other current centre backs who aren’t bad defenders at all, he just really isn’t bringing enough to the table right now or showing that mature and calm leadership that is needed.

I don’t mean just aimlessly shout and holla aggressively and fling your arms around, I mean someone who is there to organise, encourage, and be the vocal voice needed at the back. A player with experience, who is quality on the ball, good in the air, but most of all commands the defence and organises the setup.

The only semi-realistic player that would fit that bill right now is Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, and even though the links weren’t that strong yesterday, I enjoyed reading about a potential Chelsea pursuit for the first time in a while.

But in all reality, Nathan Ake is the only centre back who is currently linked and whilst I think he is an excellent defender and I’m certainly not against signing him, he isn’t the calibre of centre back that we need to be bringing in right now.

A Koulibaly type signing is the difference between our defence being dodgy as they are currently, or being solid and helping us stay in the top four this season.
