Chelsea fans have been spending the last weeks since the disappointing January transfer window debating what areas Frank Lampard needs to bring quality additions to.
Lampard made it clear that he wanted attacking reinforcements in January, but they didn’t arrive.
Whilst I do agree that he does need to sign one or two more quality attacking players, there is a much more pressing area that needs reinforcing, and that’s a new centre back.
All season Lampard has been swapping and rotating between his four current options Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen.
This to me says everything, not one of his options are standout enough to be indispensable, we are no more or no less confident with any of them. They are all decent players, but none of them are world class or even top quality (yet). There is the issue.
Lampard cannot go on with his defence being as shaky and unpredictable as it is. He needs to have at least one centre back who is the first player he writes on his team sheet every week, he needs his John Terry, or his Virgil van Dijk.
He needs a dominant leader at the heart of his defence who will organise and rally those ahead of and around him.
But it will be so important to select the right player, because as well as leadership skills he needs a ball player as well due to how he plays out from the back.
This is the most important position that needs to be an absolute priority this summer, if the scouting team are not already working on signing a new centre back with the above qualities, then I will be in disbelief.
