Chelsea should recall different centre back if that’s what they’ve decided – opinion

If you have a choice out of bringing Aaron Anselmino or Mamadou Sarr into our defence this winter, which Chelsea do have, you chose Sarr, right?

Of course, the major downside about choosing Sarr is you p*ss Strasbourg off again, but the fans are already fuming with BlueCo and absolutely hate them anyway, so can it really get much worse!?

Chelsea want a new centre back this window, and they’ve recalled Anselmino. As we’ve reported, we’ve been hearing that they have been discussing sending Anselmino to Strasbourg so they can recall Sarr into the Chelsea team. This is what we are being told is still the most likely scenario, but all options are still open.

The reason they have recalled Anselmino now is because there was a cut off date for the clause to end his loan – so they made the decision to trigger it whilst they could, and then decide what they are going to do afterwards. So we have to wait and see what happens here.

I don’t expect to see Anselmino stay as our new centre back this window. Remember, they briefed that they wanted a new centre back to come in and improve what we have as a STARTER! With the upmost respect to Anselmino, and I do think he’s had a decent loan spell with Dortmund and has improved a lot, he’s played just 34 senior games in his career so far and has only been capped internationally at U20 level so far. That for me does not represent a STARTER coming in for us in the Premier League. Nope.

Sarr only has 79 senior club appearances to his name but he does come with more experience, and he’s also a captain already at the age of 20. As well as that, he’s been a regular up through the ranks at French youth level and has 4 Senegal senior caps. Not overly experienced, but edges it over Anselmino and also, I think he’s a better overall centre back and is well known by Liam Rosenior.

None of them are ideal choices right now though and for me, as I keep bloody saying, we should be signing an experienced and Premier League proven centre back in to upgrade what we have. But that ain’t happening is it? Clearly. Sigh. Sick of it.

As I say, based on what we’ve heard, we aren’t expecting Anselmino to stay, but all options are open at the time of writing this.
