I’ve seen the many rumours linking Chelsea to signing West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, and whilst I understand the links, any move for the England international would be a waste of time.
Rice is a more physical and robust type holding midfielder, something that Chelsea lack a little. Now I do not know whether this is the type of calibre of midfielder that Frank Lampard wants to bring in or not, but if he does, he needn’t look any further than what he already has at his disposal.
Is Jorginho the guy? This is debatable. Whilst a world class ball player and plays with 100% desire, his pace and physicality can often let him down in the Premier League, which is notoriously robust.
I am not sure if Lampard is fully confident in him in that role and might look for a player that can provide more defensive cover. This is also why Mateo Kovacic might not be that guy either. Yes he has the pace to recover and can match most players physically, he still doesn’t give the entire defensive strength to that role.
But this does not mean that Lampard needs Rice, because he has a player in the ranks who will become much better than Rice – Ethan Ampadu.
I truly believe that the Welsh international can be as good an all-round defensive midfielder as any player Chelsea can sign, he just needs a string of games.
He plays there for Wales, and Ryan Giggs rates him massively in that role. He has all the attributes you need to be a top holding midfielder in he Premier League.
He is excellent defensively, can make a brilliant tackle, has pace, but is also technically brilliant and able to pass out the back a lot better than most with the type of physicality that technical players don’t usually have.
This is without even thinking about Billy Gilmour, who is also going to be a way better midfielder than Declan Rice, but that’s another article.
Don’t even look at Rice, Lamps – you have Ethan.
