Football.London have just published a list of Chelsea’s potential penalty takers for this season (yes, it’s that time of year).
It’s actually a pretty interesting to think about – well, at least it will tide us over until the friendly on Sunday…
With Eden Hazard going, we’ve lost not only a superb player and our most dynamic attacking thread from the last ten years, we’ve also lost one of the coolest spot kick takers in world football.
From the Champions League to the World Cup, Eden has been slotting left right and centre for club and county since he was 19. Before him, we were spoiled by having Frank Lampard, an equally deadly kick taker, as our main man.
So who steps up now? Several people have suggested that it’s time to give the role back to a striker, but the man who is top of our list at the moment is another midfielder. Jorginho may have missed in the shootout against Man City in the Carabao Cup final, but he’s otherwise been very reliable, scoring twice from the spot when Hazard wasn’t on the pitch last season.
Perhaps he was only given the duty by Maurizio Sarri last season because he was his trusted lieutenant on the pitch, but we reckon he should keep it this season. It’s not like we have an established top-tier striker who’s going to be missing out.
It would also go a long way to boosting his goals and assist total for the season, just to keep the stats lovers happy…
