Ethan Ampadu Ethan Ampadu

It’s time to recall Ethan Ampadu and let him define one position on the pitch

As I type this, I am currently watching Sheffield United get beaten by Crystal Palace in the Premier League, bar any dramatic late come backs that looks near impossible.

United currently sit well and truly rooted the the bottom of the Premier League with just two points registered to their name.

Chelsea have also opened talks to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, full story HERE!

Why does this affect Chelsea? Well, one of our highly rated young players Ethan Ampadu is currently on loan there and in the midst of it all.

Not only can playing in a relegation struggling team who are showing no signs of managing to turn things around be detrimental to the players playing for them, but it can set young developing players back years.

Ampadu has spent the season rotating between playing as a centre back for Sheffield United, or as a defensive midfielder – this is a real issue. He needs to be playing regularly in one position and given an opportunity to have a run of games there and nail it down as his best position.

The young Welsh international has never been able to do that in his career so far, and it is hugely important that he identifies himself as either a defender, or a midfielder – otherwise he could soon fade out as just another decent player.

At the age of 20, Chelsea need to recall him this month and send him elsewhere, perhaps even the Championship, or a Ligue 1 side.

I think this is now a massive decision that Chelsea need to make and could be the difference between Ampadu making it in the big time or not. These are very decisive and pinnacle moments in his career, and keeping him at United where he will not improve as a player and continue to just get used as a utility player, will only have a negative affect on his future career.

Bring him back now and revise his next move. Let him nail down on position and one position only; he needs to either be called a defender or a midfielder, not both.
