The news that Chelsea are set to appoint Petr Cech as a director of football can only be seen as good.
Of course people will always find something to complain about – in this case his “lack of experience”, and there is merit in avoiding the idea that successful former players can solve everything.
But anyone who has come into contact with Petr will tell you he’s a vastly intelligent and focused man, who has all the tools to excel in this role. Bearing in mind that the club haven’t even had a person in this role since Michael Emenalo left in November 2017, and it’s hard to see this hurting them. Surely anybody is better than a vacant post.
Someone who is popular with the fans, has links with the past but is still a top level player who understands the game seems ideal, especially when they are as well liked and intelligent as Cech.
We have talented players and a big enough budget to compete at the top levels. We just need more direction and more sensible decisions from the top of the club.
There’s no reason why Petr can’t be the man to provide them.
