Reports of a Chelsea major summer overhaul not unrealistic

Yesterday there were reports flying around online of Frank Lampard’s plans to sell a number of players, and speculations of exactly how much he will have to spend on bringing new players in.

The Sun’s report suggesting 8 players could be axed is actually not far from the truth. The players they mention could easily leave in the summer. But the thing is, there could be even more players who could ask to leave/get axed by Lampard.

They name Kepa Arrizabalaga, Kurt Zouma, Emerson, Marcos Alonso, Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Willian and Pedro as the players who could leave.

For a starters, they don’t mention Olivier Giroud, who’s contract is up in the summer and we pretty much already know that will not be renewed.

Then there is Willy Caballero who is in the same situation, Michy Batshuayi will surely ask to leave after his bit-part role this season, the talk of an N’Golo Kante exit will not disappear, and Antonio Rudiger has lost the faith of many Chelsea fans and could end up being doubted.

This is obviously not to say that Chelsea will lose all of those 13 players in the summer, because that just isn’t sustainable. But there is every chance that a good chunk of these players will go in the summer.

A Chelsea squad overhaul is absolutely on the cards. Lampard has already engineered the signing of Hakim Ziyech who arrives in the summer from Ajax, but he will surely need at least another 4 top calibre signings into the senior squad this summer, AT LEAST.

The likelihood is that depending on how many players leave, Lampard will also look to promote 2 or 3 more players from the academy into the senior squad for next season in order to give the quality depth needed.

It could very much be a case of deadwood out this summer, and it’s long overdue.
