Antonio Conte

A conversation on Talk Sport regarding Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and his team selections has raised more than a few eye brows.

The theme revolved around the Huddersfield Town game in which Conte decided to rest both Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud. Chelsea needed to win to further their Champions League ambitions and Huddersfield required a draw to stay up.

It seemed an odd decision to leave out both your best player and your most potent goal scorer in what seemed a straight forward game of attack and defence. The theory is Conte wanted out of Chelsea and a Champions League place would be seen a good reason to stay. As far as conspiracy theories go this is as good as it gets.

Antonia Conte is no ordinary club manager. Conte played in Serie A as a sixteen year old and won every major honour in the game except for a World Cup winner’s medal. He has two runners up medals. Since 2006 Conte has managed six teams, five in Italy and Chelsea.

Beginning at Serie B side Arezzo(2006) and culminating at Juventus (2011-14) his credentials are impeccable. His record at Juventus is formidable. Three Italian league titles and two cups in three years.

Out of the blue he resigned and became national team coach. A two year deal that ended in a Euro 16 quarter final defeat by Germany 6-5 on penalties. And then came Chelsea.

What blows the conspiracy theories out of the window is Conte’s past conduct and record of achievements. Antonio Conte is prone to make mistakes (who in football isn’t) but his ambition, determination and drive for success cannot be questioned.  That is why any suggestion that Antonio Conte does not want to win every game is beyond ridiculous.

The facts speak for themselves however if I was a betting man I would not bet against Conte resigning at the end of the season. The warning signs are there and Chelsea have form on that subject.

Anything can happen and likely will. Now that the season is coming to an end life can get tedious. I get my fun at Swanky Bingo, it’s one of the best bingo sites to win on and the games are easy to play. The approaching World Cup is not guaranteed to be as much fun.
