When a new manager comes to a club, there seems to always be a fiat chance for everyone to show their quality and impress the new manager that the player deserves a starting shirt. At Chelsea, the case is even more unique as there is a lot riding on this year’s team performance.
Frank Lampard coming on board had no choice but to work with a transfer ban explains why everyone knows this is their time to fight for a place in the team. The goalkeeping position seems sorted as Kepa Arrizabalaga keeps his place.
The defence looks shaky with the return of some players and also the current ones wanting to keep their place. Kurt Zouma has returned from his loan at Everton and he is convinced that he can stay at Chelsea and fight for his place in the team, according to Myphonefootball.
There is obviously David Luiz that was given an extension to his contract at the end of last season and there is Antoine Rudiger also. The battle for first-choice seems pretty straight forward and all have to show they deserve it ahead of the other person and not just on pedigree but what they show on the pitch.
The midfield is an interesting one because if Lampard wants to adopt former manager, ideology, two of the slot have been sealed. Jorginho and Ngolo Kante are two players that are likely to keep their shirt in the team leaving just one slot available if he decides to go for a three-man midfield.
He could also decide to return Kante to the defensive midfield role and have Jorginho fight for his place in the team. Whichever the case may be, the attacking midfield role is up for grabs and several players have lined up for this. Kovacic loan deal was made permanent while the likes of Ross Barkley and Mason Mount have the ability to do the work required there. There are several matches in a season and everyone will get his chance but some will be made the bedrock of the squad.
With Hazard gone and Hudson Odoi signing a new deal, that means the boy will get more starting shirt and will be a key member of the squad while Michy Batshuayi has returned from the loan which means that Chelsea now has three strikers in him, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud. Morata is set to complete his move to Atletico Madrid which makes things clearer.
It will all start from where the manager sees each player’s future. The likes of Abraham can play centrally or on the wing which still have Willian and Pedro there. What will be expected is that Abraham will likely play more games in the cup and Batshuayi and Giroud fight for the main striker slot.
As the season progresses, Abraham can easily make a case for himself as it seems Lampard believes in the player. Interesting times ahead at Stamford Bridge as everyone is watching the magic Super Frankie will pull with the team.
