Chelsea’s loan army is in a bit of a funny situation this year.
Because of the transfer ban, the majority of its leading lights have returned to the first team squad. That’s great for us, but not for the loan army. Mason Mount, Kurt Zouma, Tammy Abraham and several others make welcome returns to Stamford Bridge, but leave the loan army looking a little thin.
No matter, it’s the chance for lesser names to shine. And nobody has seized on their chance better than Conor Gallagher. Having spent so long in the shadow of more illustrious colleagues in the youth teams, he now is getting great attention for his start at Charlton.
The midfielder came on as a sub in his first game, and has started the three games since, cementing himself in Lee Bowyer’s team who are impressing in the Championship after promotion this summer.
The Addicks strong start has given the Chelsea man a great platform, and his WhoScored rating is above 7 after 4 games. That’s good going for a guy in his first year in senior football.
We thought this would be a great spot for Conor, and so it’s proving to be. He’s got the perfect combination of playing every week, but playing at a high level too. The Championship is relentless, and he will really be tested as we get into the gritty winter period.
So don’t just look at the loan stars who are back in Frank Lampard’s team, look at the other young players who have the chance now to shine under a much brighter spotlight than they might otherwise be getting.
