Where Havertz and Werner would fit in at Chelsea and the reasons behind the potential moves

Chelsea appear to be doing a madness in the transfer market this summer, or at least those are the reported plans.

We know that striker Timo Werner has agreed to join (Source – BBC), and we just await official word from the club.

But as well as this potential arrival, Chelsea have contacted Bayer Leverkusen about signing their star Kai Havertz, as per The Guardian this lunchtime.

The two German arrivals would be a massive show of intent from the club, and that is before we even start talking about a new left back, a centre back, and whoever else might be arriving in the summer.

It looks like Frank Lampard is being rightfully backed, and it looks like the squad could go through a mini-overhaul this summer.

So how does Lampard fit these two top quality attacking players into his already stacked squad?

Well, the simplistic answer to this is – rotation.

I hate it when I see people ask ‘how will you fit all that quality into one starting 11’? The key is, you don’t. Because we will be playing over 60 matches in a season if successful in competitions, we will need every player.

You might think that the likes of Havertz and Werner will not come to sit on the bench. Of course not, but Lampard will rotate and there will still be plenty of game time available for all players.

He will need to shrink his current squad though, and I can see both Ross Barkley and Jorginho potentially leaving in the summer to accommodate the two Germans.

Yes they are attacking players and Jorginho is a deeper midfielder. But I think we will see Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek playing in the deeper roles this season, allowing the pending exciting new attackers do their thing ahead of them.

So why are we spending a potential ยฃ70 million on Havertz when we have a lot of midfielders already? Simply because he is a top class young talent and has the ability to become a top 5 player in the world VERY soon. If you want to win titles, you need the BEST players available.

Chelsea players already in the squad should feel excited by this, rather than threatened or upset. Because if Lampard is adding superstars to an already decent squad, then we all have the prospect of major honours coming back to Stamford Bridge sometime very soon.

The logic is that if you want to be the best, you have to have the best.

And here is an example of how you fit them both in the same squad based on selling Jorginho and Barkley, and the best squads needing two top quality options for every position.

Goalkeepers – Kepa Arrizabalaga (Willy Caballero).

Left backs – Ben Chilwell (Emerson Palmieri).

Right backs – Reece James (Cesar Azpilicueta).

Centre backs – Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen (Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori).

Deep midfielders – Mateo Kovacic (N’Golo Kante and Billy Gilmour).

Centre midfielders – Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kai Havertz (Mason Mount).

Wide left – Timo Werner (Christian Pulisic).

Wide right – Hakim Ziyech (Callum Hudson-Odoi).

Striker – Tammy Abraham (Olivier Giroud).
