Chelsea are off the back of two clean sheets and have looked a lot more solid at the back recently.
But this is largely due to the system being played and the ability to push the wingers back to play as wing backs if the team are under attack. It has also largely been as a result of the intensive midfield three and the energy and pace of Billy Gilmour giving the back line a lot more bodies in support and in recovery.
Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger have both had a decent couple of games, but they are still having those dodgy moments making little mistakes that could easily have lead to goals.
Mistakes are natural in football, but all Chelsea’s centre backs have been far too error prone this season, resulting in dropped points and losses.
Also add to this the fact that when the team has been on a downer, none of the current centre backs have been the ones to step up and pick the team up, this is something that is really missing from Frank Lampard’s back line.
For this reason, Lampard will still look to sign a new centre back in the summer and I understand that he wants a certain calibre of defender.
He is looking at strong leader-types, who are good in the air, dominates the box, but can also play.
Who? I hear you ask. Well I’m speculating of course but I would imagine Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, Brighton’s Lewis Dunk, and Leicester City’s Çağlar Söyüncü as three names who will be linked, but there will most certainly be more.
