Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea captain Gary Cahill on loan, report Birmingham Live.

Cahill has shown willingness to stay at Stamford Bridge and fight for game-time under Maurizio Sarri, but Chelsea might be better off parting with him while they still can.

Both Andreas Christensen and Ethan Ampadu would be more worthy of those minutes as they continue their development into the players they’re seemingly destined to be.

Cahill has been an exemplary servant and remains an influential player in the squad, but from a footballing point of view, moving him on may well be the best option.

Former side Aston Villa could be an option for Cahill. He’ll likely receive a glowing report of the EFL Championship from former centre-back partner John Terry.

Is Cahill still too good to be playing outside of the Premier League? Probably. The fact remains, though, that he’s no longer good enough to start here. We need to find a solution which benefits all parties.

Why are Aston Villa such huge fans of our ex-captains?
