Chelsea are in the running to sign Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld, according to the Telegraph.
Alderweireld has firmly established himself among the best defenders in the world during his time at White Hart Lane. As much as it pains us to admit it, Spurs’ back-line is one of the best in Europe, and Alderweireld is a major contributing factor.
The prospect of him moving to Chelsea at first glance appears to be entirely realistic, but the Telegraph claim that it may not be as unthinkable as you may have thought. Our betting partner www.chancehill.com can give you the latest odds on the Belgian joining Chelsea.
As per the Telegraph, Alderweireld and Spurs are in a stand-off over his contract. They note that the Belgian’s £50K-a-week contract runs until 2019, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side having the option to extend it for a further year.
However, the Telegraph report that if they did choose to take up that option of a one-year extension, it would trigger another clause in his contract which would allow him to leave the club if any interested party were willing to pay just £25M.
The Telegraph believe that this could force Tottenham into listening to offers for him in the summer of 2018, with Chelsea and Manchester City said to be in the running to secure his signature.
