Maurizio Sarri

Chelsea are reportedly in talks with Real Madrid over signing Croatia international Mateo Kovacic.

Kovacic is incredibly talented, this has never been called into question. There was a reason he earned his big-money move to Real Madrid in the first place, but the competition for game-time in the Los Blancos midfield is tough.

He has struggled to establish himself a regular starter during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, and has made no secret of his desire to leave the club this summer, whether it be on-loan or on a permanent basis.

Chelsea may well be set to offer him an escape route. Goal claim that we’re in talks to sign Kovacic on a season-long loan. It’s a move that could sweeten the deal for Thibaut Courtois to move in the opposite direction.

There does not appear to be any option to buy, but Kovacic would be an excellent stop-gap, with Maurizio Sarri clearly keen to add another midfielder to his squad between now and the deadline.
