Southampton centre-back Virgil Van Dijk is in a sticky situation.
As the London Evening Standard report, the Dutchman was being targeted by Chelsea’s Premier League counterparts Liverpool, but they were forced to apologise and pull out of the race to sign him after allegedly ‘tapping-up’ Van Dijk.
The London Evening Standard report that Chelsea are in the market for a new centre-back, and were previously interested in drafting in Van Dijk. However, the paper believe that the Premier League champions may not resume their interest in signing him, despite Liverpool no longer providing competition.
After his stellar performances for the Saints last season, prior to sustaining a serious ankle injury, Van Dijk is now considered among the best centre-backs in the league. He would, undoubtedly, be a good acquisition for any side – however, if the London Evening Standard are correct in their report, it doesn’t look as though he will be house hunting in West London this summer.
