Chelsea targeting a world class reinforcement at the back

Once more Chelsea are linked with a couple of big money transfer deals by various sources, but unlike the previous times, there is a rumour we can be really excited about.

According to Sport Bild, Chelsea are looking to sign Borussia Dortmund captain and center back, Mats Hummel’s in a 35 million Euro deal, with the German’s deal set to expire by the end of next season.

Hummels has been one of the best products of the Klopp Revolution in North-Rhein Westphalia, and has been the captain for about two years now. He’s just hitting his peak years at 27 years of age and has had a pretty decent injury record over the past year.

The reason why this deal should be exciting should it happen is because center back is the most problematic position in our current time, not to mention that we will lose plenty of leadership and strength when John Terry leaves. Such an addition of world-class calibre would help restrengthen what has been holed brick wall of a defence that we’ve had this season. His experience at the very highest levels of football would also help Zouma progress having obviously learned plenty from Terry during the past 18 months or so. Moreover, Hummel’s will not reportedly cost as much as Kostas Manolas, with whom we have been linked in the past couple of weeks, despite the fact that the German is much more experience and generally a better center back.

How true this rumour is remains to be seen. And while Bild is not exactly the classiest of newspapers around, the German media is not as crazy as the their English counterparts, when it comes to football transfers, so we can wait and see whether our beloved club can pull through such a deal.
