Chelsea target Virgil Van Dijk looks as though he could be on his way out of Southampton this summer, report the Metro.
Despite spending several months on the sidelines after suffering a serious ankle injury, Van Dijk was still one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League last campaign. His good performances at St. Mary’s do not appear to have gone unnoticed.
As per the Metro, both Chelsea and Liverpool are interested in securing the Dutchman’s services, and they have just been offered plenty of encouragement in their respective pursuits.
The Metro quote newly-appointed Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who reveals that Van Dijk is no longer training with the rest of the Saints squad after asking to leave the club:
“The boy said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave. This is the decision.”
There does not appear to be any dire need of defensive reinforcements after the arrival of Antonio Rudiger from AS Roma, but if the Metro are correct in reporting that Chelsea are in the race for Van Dijk, he would be more than welcome at Stamford Bridge.
