West Ham United are prepared to offer Gary Cahill an escape route when the transfer window opens in January, according to the Mirror.
Cahill has been used scarcely by Maurizio Sarri so far this campaign. His importance to the dressing room cannot be questioned, he’s one of the most experienced players currently playing in the Premier League. However, his significance on the pitch has diminished.
Sarri has frequently fielded two centre-backs in Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz who are both astute in possession and are able to operate in a high defensive line. Cahill is of a dying breed of defenders. He’s not, on paper, Sarri’s cup of tea.
If he’s unable to break back into the starting eleven, a transfer away could be the only option for Cahill. The Mirror believe that West Ham are alert to the situation and are thought to be interested in signing him.
A move to the Hammers would grant Cahill an opportunity to continue playing first-team football long into his thirties. He also would not need to move out of London, which would be ideal for both himself and his family.
Cahill is a Chelsea great and will be forever cherished for the role he played in our Champions League triumph back in 2012. All good things have to come to an end, though, and this chapter could soon be drawing to a close.
