Report: Chelsea could be set to sell £35m player for fraction of price

In what may well be touted as one of Chelsea FC’s worst transfer deals in recent history, Danny Drinkwater’s value has dropped tenfold since his £35m signing in September 2017 from Leicester City.

Chelsea could be willing to offload the midfielder for just £3.5m, it is reported that his representatives have already ‘initiated contact’ with interested Bundesliga clubs. Schalke 04 and FC Koln have emerged as possible suitors. (FussballTransfers)

Drinkwater looks to get his career back on track after being looked over for more than two years. He is currently training with the Chelsea academy team to maintain his fitness levels.

Following unsuccessful loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa, his future in England looks bleak. It is even rumoured that Chelsea might be willing to pay a part of his salary, an initiative that opens up the player to a larger number of clubs. (football.london)

With Declan Rice and Jadon Sancho as potential transfers, Chelsea are desperate to offload several players including the likes of Emerson Palmieri, Marcos Alonso, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Antonio Rudiger, and Michi Batshuayi. (football.london)

Along with current Chelsea teammate and French international N’Golo Kante, Drinkwater set up a formidable midfield partnership to help Leicester secure an unlikely EPL crown in 2015/16. A tale of contrasting fortunes have been summed up between the two. While Kante has been a regular, Danny is currently plying his trade with Chelsea’s U-23 side.

In the space of two years, Drinkwater has been charged with drink-driving, involved in a nightclub brawl, head-butted ex-teammate Jota at Aston Villa, and started a brawl with a 16-year-old in an academy match.

His decline from Premier League 2015/16 champion to not having a squad number for the 2020/21 season, speak volumes of how much football can take away – just as it gives.
