Antonio Conte has revealed that he is unsure what the future holds for Baba Rahman, but hinted that he would like to give the Ghanian an opportunity to impress at Stamford Bridge, report chelseafc.com.
Baba has shown great promise in the past. In the season prior to his arrival in SW6, he completed more successful tackles than anyone else in the Bundesliga. Though he was unable to nail down the left-back spot due to Jose Mourinho’s reluctance to place trust in younger players, when he did play he often impressed.
Devastatingly, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture at the African Cup of Nations at the start of the year, and has not featured since. Conte is not prepared to call-time on Baba’s Chelsea future, however, and revealed in his pre-Stoke City press conference that he will do everything he can to aid his recovery.
Conte is quoted by the club’s official website saying:
“This player is coming back from a bad injury and he’s struggling a bit to recover the best form. I must be honest, I don’t know what will happen with Baba. From a human aspect, I’d like to give him an opportunity to come back strong like before.”
“Now he has to face his recovery. He’s showing great patience because he’s struggling a lot. If I can help him I’m ready to help him because there is the player, and then there is the human aspect. For him it’s good to stay here and recover.”
Conte’s comments suggest that Baba’s Chelsea career is by no means over. Let’s hope he can get back to full fitness and start providing Marcos Alonso with some genuine competition on the left-hand-side.
