Baba Rahman

Baba Rahman’s loan to Schalke looks set to be cut short.

Baba’s a strange one. He was signed as an alternative to Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back after impressing for FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

He showed glimpses of promise when given an opportunity by Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink, but never really threatened to break into our starting eleven.

He subsequently left on-loan in hope of gaining more game-time and continuing his development. Baba started brightly at Schalke, then came catastrophe.

He ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in January 2017 while at the African Cup of Nations with Ghana. He’s only made five appearances since.

Schalke appear to have run out of patience with Baba, whether it be due to his fitness or decreased performance level following his injury.

It seems highly improbable that Baba will be an option for Maurizio Sarri, unless either Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri leave this winter.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see him shipped out on-loan once again, but as with most of these things, we’ll just have to wait and see.
