Maurizio Sarri is one of the best managers on the planet right now, but he was not always able to pay his bills by his work on a football field.
Sarri is a rare breed, a top-level manager who never actually played football. Jose Mourinho did play professionally, just not particularly well. Sarri was unable to make it as a professional footballer.
Thankfully for him, he was able to work his way up to the summit of the football world with his mind, rather than his feet. It was the brain power that makes him the manager that he is that previously earned him his wages.
Up until 1999, Sarri worked as bank clerk. He then decided to take a leap of faith and go into coaching, starting at the bottom and working through to Serie A.
Being appointed by Chelsea complete’s his meteoric rise to the top. It really is quite astonishing.
