Antonio Conte has admitted that his was visited by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich at the Cobham training ground earlier this week, report the London Evening Standard.
Upon first viewing, this news rings more than a few bells. It unearths memories that are best kept locked away. Think Jose Mourinho, think Roberto Di Matteo, two of the most adored figures in the club’s history, discarded by Abramovich after a string of disappointing results.
There’s every possibility that Conte could be next on the chopping block – but not yet. Abramovich did not march into Cobham donning dark robes and carrying a scythe – if Conte is to be believed, he came for a chat.
Conte explained in his pre-match press conference that it is ‘normal’ that the Russian should visit him in this manner, and the pair spoke about Chelsea’s recent results and performances.
The London Evening Standard quote Conte, who says:
“Yes, Mr Abramovich was in Cobham on Sunday after the Bournemouth game to watch the training, to speak. But it’s normal, this.”
“Honestly, we spoke about the Bournemouth game and then the first game against Rome. We spoke about this.”
Abramovich resisted pushing the eject button for some time during Mourinho’s period of struggle in 2015. Let’s hope he does the same with Conte and gives him an opportunity to turn our fortunes around.
